The Sun Fire V480 Server represents Sun's cutting-edge enterprise network computing prowess, leveraging UltraSPARC processor technology. This workgroup server introduces multiprocessing capabilities, Fibre Channel disk drives, and the widely adopted Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) I/O bus within a highly modular, rack-optimized 5RU design. Compatible with a standard 72” height Sun StorEdge rack, accommodating up to seven (depending on configuration) Sun Fire V480 servers, it offers versatility in deployment.

Configurable with either two or four processors running Solaris 8 at 900 MHz, the server requires processors to be added in pairs, supporting 1 GB to 8 GB of local memory per processor. With all memory accessible by any processor, the Sun Fire V480 server can host up to 32 GB of main memory and features two internal, 36-GB or 73-GB Fibre Channel hard drives, along with six PCI slots connected to two high-performance PCI I/O busses. This server is tailored to meet the needs of applications or enterprises prioritizing compute density at an affordable price point.

The Sun Fire V480 Server and Sun Fire V490 Server share several key similarities, making them both formidable options in the realm of enterprise computing. They feature highly modular, rack-optimized designs, fitting into standard rack units for efficient deployment in data center environments.
